At twenty-eight, Brent seems to have it all. The job, the pad, the clothes, the hairless back. Everything but the lady of his dreams - Piper, a spirited coworker with a knack for mixing outrageous banter with worldly insights.
The problem - Piper’s BFF is Carnie, a fellow coworker who happens to be Brent’s ex. Although Brent dumped Carnie ages ago, she refuses to move on and secretly stalks him. To further complicate things, Piper has unwittingly become Carnie’s confidante in her ongoing quest to win Brent back.
Yep, trading up won’t be easy. But Brent’s feelings can’t be denied. As his obsession intensifies, so too does Carnie’s ploy to thwart his inevitable mission. Rather than deal with the situation head on, Brent tailspins into a world of crappy dates, gratuitous parties, and peculiar dog fetishes.
One epochal afternoon, however, Brent decides he’s had enough. In a heartfelt yet comedic apex, Brent confronts the women and drills home an underlying message - that true happiness can only be found through honesty, with both yourself and others.
THE EX AND THE WHY is an offbeat novel that explores the thrilling freedoms and paralyzing self-doubts that can define one’s twenties. With a big-city, consulting-firm backdrop, it appeals to the millions worldwide who have worked at such firms as well as young adults navigating their first post-college jobs. It includes elements that resonate with both men (gross-out) and women (romance and bitchiness).

Perusing Amazon, I selected this book after the cover caught my eye. Wasn’t expecting much but soon I was reading as fast as I could … rooting for Brent and his quest to find real love. Yes, Brent is flawed … insecure and obsessed with appearance … but I fell in love with him nonetheless and kept hoping he would finally proclaim his love for Piper and acknowledge that it’s not all about the job, clothes, gym feats, and dog fetishes. The secondary characters were outstanding, too. Brent and his friends at the office are quite the entertaining troupe that both love and sometimes loathe each other. Like real life, these friends are multi-dimensional, complicated beings who don’t always do what they want or say what they mean. It’s real life like I haven’t read in quite some time.
And I absolutely couldn't wait to see if things would work out between Piper, Carnie, and Brent – the central love triangle propelling the plot forward. There’s only one outcome here … and the reader knows all won’t be happy. How that plays out will keep the pages turning.
Overall, the story brought me to tears, made me laugh, and sent me to the shower to wash away the reminders of my youth. Yes, parts made me queasy – like when Kyle had no choice but the use a toilet clogged to the rim with no toilet paper to assist. But the gross-out was nicely juxtaposed with a touch of sweetness that prevailed throughout the read. I highly recommend it.

The Ex and the Why edition by Bob Sinnott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Bob Sinnott is the new voice of a generation! This book has it all – bromance, beemers, bimbos, booze, and things that don’t even start with “B.” Like – accountants! Boring? Think again. We’re not talking about IRS washouts here. We’re talking about ambitious, hot-to-trot twenty-somethings with big-time degrees from bigger-time universities making coin for the first time while flaunting credit cards, smart phones, and bleached teeth. No more reliance on mommy and daddy. Gone, too, are the togas, mixers, and drunken hookups without consequences. Jobs and reputations are at stake now. Blow chow at a party – the office is gonna hear about it. Wear blue with brown – your closet better have good lighting because the wrong shade will have you lunching at Ann Taylor.
With a dead-on satirical corporate backdrop, hysterical yet enduring characters, and fresh, snappy writing, this one will keep you guffawing out your nose until you’re late for (insert place). It’s a lean 270 pages that felt more like 150. Perfect for today’s busy professional.
Bottom-line Every thirty years a “voice of a generation” unveils itself. JD Salinger rattled the fifties. Bret Easton Ellis rocked the eighties. Bob Sinnott owns the now! I’m giving this one five stars only because I didn’t see an option for six.
There's a reason the author apologizes to his parents at the beginning of the book.
Pros
Interesting take on a group of accountants. I thought that accountants were stuffy and boring. None of these were. They are frenemies who hang together simply because they work together and are competitive, not because they really like each other.
Cons The author continually puts in amusing stories that don't further the plot whatsoever (most having to do with human excrement). I don't disagree that poop stories can be hysterical, but if you took them out, the book would be better paced.
I very much enjoyed the first third of the book, getting to know the characters, their relationships, etc. I found the concept of these accountants and their social, uppity lives to be as far from reality as I have ever experienced (the accountants I know tend to be either introverts or flat out antisocial.) Even so, I suspended disbelief, because I was enjoying the developing story.
Unfortunately, the middle turned out to be only an extension of beginning, with no ratcheting of tension at all.
Even half way through, I wasn't sure of what the plot was supposed to be. Brett's ex-girlfriend (somebody he works with no less, which is ALWAYS a bad idea, and these are supposed to be smart people, top of their classes, working at an extremely prestigious firm) encourages others believe she and Brett are getting back together. Brett strings her along with friendship and doesn't confront her about the deception, primarily because she's good company when he's bored.
But even those things I overlooked and kept reading, because I kept expecting more tension with the ex girlfriend. I got 49% through and quit -- one poop story too many, even for me. This one may actually have furthered the plot, but I was done.
I'd give this 2.5 stars, round up to 3 - it was okay. From the other reviews, I thought that this book would be a little more funny, and a little more well written. The public accounting backdrop was just that - it was the background and not really the meat of the story, which was really just about the characters and the going ons in their lives -some of which was a little too over the top (as another reviewer mentioned). With the public accounting hours that I work, I have to be very selective with which books I choose to read, and this one wasn't really worth it.
A hysterically funny look at office life! I couldn't put it down, and now that I've turned the last page, I half expect the characters to walk past my office door. Read the book now ... it's destined to become a movie!
