The Spoil of Zanuth-Karun is a prequel to The Last Death of Tev Chrisini, but it actually stands on its own as a great story of the fall of an empire torn apart by corruption and both religious and racial tensions. And, of course, a truly evil villain who delights in making society crumble from the inside so he can pick up the pieces for himself.The Spoil of ZK isn't your stereotypical epic fantasy with lots of dwarves, dragons, wizards, trolls, etc. It's a very human story about human characters. Yes, there is a bit of magic and mysticism woven through the story. You have a race of immortal people who the rest of the humans don't quite trust or understand, and an emperor dabbling in forces he ought not be messing with. But the magic in the story is mainly kept in the background where it doesn't overpower the human relationships and struggles with love and loss, courage and fear, life and death.
Even though The Spoil is a PREquel, the writing and story development here are good enough that you could read this one first and The Last Death of Tev Chrisini second and not miss a beat. In fact, after reading The Spoil, I feel like I have a much better understanding of the world laid out in The Last Death. Which makes me want to go back and re-read The Last Death of Tev Chrisini again!
Isn't that the best sign of a great series, when each book makes you want to revisit that world again?

This novel was a creative, unique, and adventurous tale that takes place in a different realm. The characters were so versatile, yet all connected with each other throughout the entire story. I was intrigued with the fantasy-produced surroundings of the characters, yet there was a similarity to present-day times with their interaction and conversation. This is something quite unique from most fantasy-type novels I have come across, and yet I enjoyed that difference in this particular saga. I recommend for readers to take this adventure and become enveloped in this creative realm of literature. I gave it four stars because this is not the genre of literature I usually read, yet was so pleasantly surprised by this novel.
This book matched the first . Just wonderful. You will find yourself immersed within the story. You are running out of breath with the characters and crying with them in their sadness and sharing their laughter as they rejoice .I absolutely loved being a part of this book. It is such a crazy journey on a long winding road up a mountain! In other words , you shall not be bored! And the view is worth it!
When reading a prequel, I always look for elements that tie the story into the other work, and this tied in quite well. The added surprise was at the end, when a few final elements clicked into place, and in a moment of awe, you fully appreciate just how the two works tie together.

This book is the prequel to Ms. Bresnick's first and award-winning book, "The Last Death of Tev Chrisini", which I also highly recommend. It's the explanation and background of the hero and his world from the first book, and the prequel's plot is full of surprises. My favorite aspect of Ms. Bresnick's writing is how she brings her characters to life. Each major character is so articulate and psychologically complex, yet easy to understand. Not all are likeable of course, for there have to be some villains, but they are not cliche. The world she builds is quite detailed and very realistic. A thoroughly enjoyable read, but read "The Last Death" first - then you'll have two terrific epic sagas back to back!
Five stars A wonderful story. It took a couple chapters to get into my "reading zone," where I tend to forget I'm looking at words on a page and instead travel to the land I'm reading about. But that's normal in a story like this with its own unique vocabulary. I was fully absorbed by Chapter Five, and then set aside a half-day to finish the rest. I was extremely pleased in the end and plan to move on to the sequel.
Four stars I wish I'd have bought the print edition. There were some points where I had to say, "Wait..." and go back and re-read a scene, or go forward and look up something in the Glossary, and the Version had no Table of Contents, so navigating the text was a little tiresome. Still, that's a publisher issue and reflects in no way on Ms. Bresnick's awesome story.
Although this book is a prequel meant to be read after "The Last Death of Tev Chrisini", I find that it stands up perfectly well on its own and in fact made me immediately go back and read the first book one more time. This novel was so incredibly immersive that I couldn't put it down. In some fantasy novels it can be hard to keep the different characters straight, but each personality in this work is so artfully fleshed out that I felt as if they were as familiar to me as friends.
It is poetry, a sad and mournful look at ages past and innocence lost. The story comes effortlessly, the backstory intricately woven into present day... There was no "introductory period" where I felt I was being taught a history lesson to understand this new world, because I was simply there to experience it myself.
This is surely one where you need to take a deep breath and regroup after you set the book down at the end. A must-read, for certain.
